Brunswick murder stuns school 16. Police believe Moeller, at right, was shot in the driveway of the house across the street and his car rolled to a stop at the embankment. Moeller murder by a former fellow Heather Ridge School student marks the seventh homicide in Frederick County this year. Students and staff at Heather Ridge School in Frederick sought counseling and comfort this week amid a solemn atmosphere of mourning over the murder of student Phillip Daniel Moeller on Saturday. a real trauma to work through, Principal Aaron Phillips said Monday. Saturday on Petersville Road in Knoxville, slumped behind the wheel of his car with a single gunshot wound to his head, said Maryland State Police Sgt. Russell Newell. Police believe the shooting followed a verbal argument with Dexter M. Mannering, 19, of Taney Avenue in Frederick. Police arrested Mannering Saturday afternoon, and charged him with second degree murder, first degree assault and use of a handgun in commission of a felony before taking him to the Frederick County Detention Center, Newell said. Bond was set at million. Newell declined to say what police learned of why the two teens were out at a late hour and what they were doing at the time, citing the investigation as ongoing. Phillips said many of the staff and teachers at Heather Ridge knew both Moeller and Mannering well. Mannering had previously attended the school, and Moeller had been enrolled in night classes and planned to transfer to Brunswick High in January. Heather Ridge School serves students with significant emotional needs, as well as those placed on extended suspension or expulsion from their home schools. Phillips said the school sent letters home with students, explaining what had happened Saturday and how the school was providing grief counseling to students who needed it. Many teachers and staff were grieving the loss of Moeller as well as the alleged action of Mannering. One teacher Monday displayed photos of both teens, Phillips said. The Brunswick area community held a vigil Sunday night at the site of the shooting to mark Moeller life and continued honoring him early this week. On Monday evening, flickering candlelight illuminated a cross bearing Moeller name at the site of the shooting on a dark section of Petersville Road across from a few homes. Dozens of friends and family members had laid flowers at the site as well as personal items like packs of Marlboro cigarettes and note cards. The cross itself was signed with a variety of emotional messages you in our hearts and souls, love you, Phil, and love you, bro. I sorry this happened. murder is the seventh in Frederick County in 2006. Cpl. Thomas W. Deal, 40, was indicted on a first degree murder charge in October. Joy Buttrey, 34, of Frederick was shot to death May 7.
