Academy debate team places first in competition Paris T. Chavis has graduated from the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps Leader Development and Assessment Course, known as Warrior Forge, at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash. Chavis has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. She graduated from a home school program in 2002. Chavis is the daughter of John B. and Brita C. Coffie of Bowie. Bowie planning board elects chairman Toussaint Gaskins, vice chairman of the Bowie Advisory Planning Board, was unanimously elected chairman for a two year term. Community centerto close for renovations Upper Marlboro residents looking forward to activities at their local community center this year will have to find an alternative for several months while the Upper Marlboro Community Center undergoes renovations. The center will close Jan. 12 for six to nine months while the 14,731 square foot facility is upgraded. Improvements will include a fresh coat of paint, new wood flooring in the dance room, repairs to the gym and parking lot and a new roof.
