Barrett fuels Rebels' semifinal romp Before the season started, South Burlington's Courtney Barrett had never played in a high school field hockey game. Wednesday afternoon Barrett was instrumental in helping her team advance to a third straight Division I state championship game, scoring two goals to lead the top seeded Rebels to a 7 0 win over Rutland (8 6 2). "I am pumped, I am so excited I can't wait," Barrett said. "We all really wanted to go to the championship. I am hoping that we go out and do the same exact thing we did today." Just 39 seconds into the game, Barrett poked the ball into the goal after a scramble in front of the Rutland netl and South Burlington was on its way. "We wanted to play Monday and that got canceled and we were all at practice, just ready to play and it got canceled again," said Barrett. "So we were just so psyched to get out there and play." South Burlington used that pent up excitement at the beginning of the game to score an early goal and used the momentum from that score to continue its strong play. "I think that it was our momentum," South Burlington captain Anne Marie Farmer said. "This game has been pushed back, we were all just really ready to play and come out flying." Leah Charash would score eight minutes later to extend the Rebels lead to 2 0, with Farmer earning the assist, her second of the game. "We always try to try and score early. We always say the earlier you score, the better," South Burlington coach Anjie Soucy said. "Sometimes you can kind of sit back after that and they didn't, they just really kept pushing." Farmer and Barrett scored less than a minute apart to continue to build the South Burlington lead and Farmer would score again in the last minute of the first half to give the Rebels a 5 0 lead. Charash and Casey Johnson added scores in the first 10 minutes of the second half. "Especially our forward line, I feel like that's where our youngest players have been all season and I feel like now they have a sense for each other on the field," Soucy said. "I think that is something that has really come along, especially the last two or three weeks of the season." Charash, Barrett and Farmer each had two goals and Farmer had three assists for the 14 1 1 Rebels. This will be the first field hockey state championship game for Barrett, but the third in a row for Farmer. "We've all put in a lot of effort this season and it's great to see it pay off," Farmer said. "It's really awesome, we've put in a lot of work and effort and I think we deserve this." Raiders goaltender Abigail Lancour had strong day in goal, making 11 saves, including stopping Barrett on a breakaway in the first half.
