A young firefighter puts her best foot forward After completing Career Recruit School 32 last March, Upper Marlboro resident Jaimee Leigh Joroff became an Emergency Response Technician. What is so interesting is that she completed Recruit School while wearing a cast on her arm for torn tendons and a soft tissue injury. "Not a day goes by where Jaimee does not do something good for someone else," said Captain William Budd. In March, Joroff participated in the Stair Climb Challenge Leukemia Fundraiser in Seattle, Washington. Joroff and over 900 other firefighters from the United States, Canada and New Zealand climbed the stairs of a 75 story building wearing full protective gear. On the climb, Joroff carried the helmet of a friend who died in the line of duty last December. "My last conversation with [him] was about how hard the Seattle event would be to complete," said Joroff. "Later that night, he died." Come October, Joroff will run in the Marine Corps Marathon to raise money for juvenile burn victims. She currently assigned to the Calverton Fire Station in Beltsville. "We are all reminded by Jaimee that giving our best effort and service to others are qualities that are fundamental throughout life," said County Fire Chief Ronald Blackwell. Greater Mt. Nebo youth join Teen Court Six teenagers from the historical Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church participated in Teen Court, a program through the State's Attorney Office where first time juvenile offenders are judged by a jury of their teenaged peers. Among the participants at the May 27 session were Melvin Dickerson, Renee Shamburger, Mystee Edmonds, Joseph Lee, Diamond Young and Janiece Washington. Thirteen year old Diamond served as foreperson for the jury of 10. "I think it was very good experience for the young people. It allowed them to study and understand the judiciary system and to learn the roles and activities of the court system. It also allowed them to use their gifts and talents to decide the verdict of their own peers," said Rev. Shannon Pettiford, Greater Mt. Nebo's youth pastor. "It's a good model for youth leadership."for women legislators College bound female juniors and seniors from either the class of 2004 or 2005 are eligible to apply for the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) Essay Contest, announced Del.
